SweetVocab for Windows and Mac · this page:
The short version
- Your words, progress and settings are stored on your computer, not in our cloud.
- When you press an AI button, what that feature needs passes through our server to OpenAI to write the answer. The server keeps counts, never the text.
- No name or e-mail is needed to use the app. No ads, no analytics, no tracking, no selling — in the app and on this website.
What stays on your computer
Everything you make in SweetVocab — words, translations, memory tricks, progress, sentences, stories, badges and settings — is kept in a folder on your own computer: %APPDATA%\VocabMaster on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/VocabMaster on a Mac (the folder keeps the app's first name, VocabMaster). Studying, quizzes and the alphabet work without the internet. A daily backup copy is kept in the same folder.
Your plan
The first time SweetVocab starts, it makes an account for this copy of the app: a random number (like VM-7K3P9Q, shown in Settings → Your plan) and a secret key that stays on your computer. Our server keeps:
- that number, and a one-way fingerprint of the secret key (never the key itself);
- your plan (trial or Pro) and when it ends;
- when the account was made and last used, the app's version and your computer's operating system (Windows or Mac);
- counts of what you used each day and month — for example “12 new words today” — and what that cost us.
Not your name, not your e-mail address, and not your words.
Paying for Pro
Pro is sold by our online reseller Paddle.com, who takes the payment and keeps what a payment needs (your name, e-mail address and payment details) under their own privacy policy. We never see your card. They tell our server only your account number, whether your subscription is active and until when — that is all we keep about it.
The AI features
Only when you press a button that uses the AI — new words, sentences, today's story, a conversation, a new memory trick or Say it — the app sends what that feature needs to SweetVocab's server: the word or words for new cards, the words you have studied for a story, the conversation so far for Talk, the topic and level for sentences, your recording for Say it. The server checks your plan, passes the request to OpenAI to write the answer, and sends the answer back to you. The server does not store the text or the recording. OpenAI handles it under its terms for businesses that use its API.
The server runs on Cloudflare.
Your voice
Only while you hold the microphone on (🎤 in Talk, or Say it on a card) the app records up to 15 seconds. Silence is never sent. A recording with speech goes through our server to OpenAI to be written down as text; neither the app nor the server keeps the sound or a copy of it. Hearing words and replies read aloud uses your computer's own voices and sends nothing anywhere.
Keeping trials fair
So that nobody can start endless free trials, the server counts how many new accounts come from one network on one day. It does this with a one-way fingerprint of your internet address mixed with the date — the address itself is never stored, and the fingerprint changes every day.
Google Drive (only if you connect it)
To keep two computers in step, SweetVocab can use your own Google Drive. It asks Google only for the drive.appdata permission: a hidden folder in your Drive that only SweetVocab can see. It cannot read, change or delete any other file. Your sign-in stays on your computer; disconnect any time in Settings, or at myaccount.google.com/permissions. We hold no copy.
Updates
When it starts, the app reads one small file from this website (latest.json) to see whether a newer version exists. Like any website, the host sees your internet address when that happens; nothing else is sent.
This website
No cookies, no analytics, no trackers, no third-party fonts or scripts: everything on these pages comes from this site. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, and like any web host GitHub sees your internet address when you visit.
Deleting everything
Delete the folder named above and uninstall the app. If you used Google Drive, open Google Drive → Settings → Manage apps → SweetVocab (earlier: VocabMaster) → Delete hidden app data. To have your plan's counts removed from our server too, write to us with your account number.
